Growing Old Gracefully

Buddhist Psychology and the Art of Growing Old

We often associate growing old with a process of parting and loss. Of course, one can say that there is the loss of physical, and maybe even some mental abilities. And it is a given that physical dis-comforts increase, but we rarely pose the question about the new possibilities that are taking shape in that vacated space. What are the unique experiences which can arise when growing old?

In Buddhism, ‘transitory nature’ (sometimes translated somewhat narrowly as ‘impermanence’) is regarded as a characteristic of the deeper nature of existence. It shows that life is a process of continuous transformation in which the old disappears to make room for the new. When we make this ‘transitory nature’ the ground of our experience, it gives us a radically different perspective on the process of growing old, and curiosity can arise about what is and what is to become.
In this workshop, we will explore this deeper nature of existence and experience its transformative power, especially in meditative practices and in relation to the process of growing old.
